Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 medium-sized pears, peeled and finely chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free 1-to-1 flour)

Molasses Crumble Topping (Optional, enough for 2 loaf pans)

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 rounded cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease one loaf pan thoroughly and set it aside to be ready for the batter.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients and Pears: In a large mixing bowl, add the finely chopped pears, vanilla extract, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and eggs. Blend or stir well until the pears are mashed and the mixture is combined.
  3. Add Spices and Leavening: Stir in the baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the spices.
  4. Incorporate Flour: Gradually add the all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour) into the wet ingredients. Mix until everything is fully incorporated without overmixing.
  5. Prepare the Crumble Topping (Optional): In a separate bowl, combine the room temperature butter, salt, cinnamon, molasses, brown sugar, and flour. Mix until a crumbly texture forms. This can be divided and frozen for future use if desired.
  6. Fill the Loaf Pan: Pour the pear bread batter into the prepared loaf pan. If using, sprinkle the molasses crumble topping evenly over the batter.
  7. Bake: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes. Begin checking for doneness at 45 minutes by inserting a knife or toothpick into the center; it should come out clean or with just moist crumbs.
  8. Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • The baking time may vary depending on the juiciness of the pears—check from 45 minutes onwards.
  • This bread can be made gluten-free by using a 1-to-1 gluten-free flour blend in place of all-purpose flour.
  • The molasses crumble topping adds a cake-like sweetness and texture, making the bread extra special.
  • You can freeze half of the crumble topping for future use.
  • Store leftover bread wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • For a dairy-free version of the crumble topping, substitute butter with a vegan butter alternative.
