The foil packets lock in moisture and aromas, delivering a delicious one-pan dinner with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein and Vegetables

  • 1 1/2 pounds thinly sliced beef steak (such as sirloin or round)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 pounds baby potatoes, halved (or small potatoes cut into 1-inch chunks)

Seasoning and Oils

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons steak seasoning (or your favorite all-purpose seasoning blend)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste (optional, depending on your seasoning blend)
  • Nonstick cooking spray (for foil, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Foil: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup. Tear off 4 large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil (about 12×18 inches each). Lightly spray the center of each foil sheet with nonstick cooking spray if desired to prevent sticking.
  2. Prep Vegetables and Beef: Thinly slice the onions and halve the baby potatoes (or cut larger potatoes into 1-inch chunks). Pat the beef dry with paper towels and, if needed, slice into strips thinly enough for even cooking.
  3. Season Vegetables: In a large bowl, toss the halved potatoes and sliced onions with olive oil, steak seasoning, and a pinch of salt and black pepper as desired. This ensures even seasoning throughout the packets.
  4. Assemble Foil Packets: Divide the seasoned onion-and-potato mixture evenly among the centers of the four foil sheets. Top each with an equal portion of the sliced beef, spreading it out evenly to help it cook uniformly.
  5. Seal Packets: Bring the long sides of the foil up over the filling and fold them down tightly to seal. Then roll up the short ends to form snug packets with a little internal space for steam circulation to cook the ingredients thoroughly.
  6. Bake: Place the foil packets on the prepared baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced and the beef is cooked through. For thinner beef or less done meat, open the packets for the last 5 minutes to allow steam to escape and reduce cooking time slightly.
  7. Check Doneness: Carefully open one packet (watch out for hot steam) and test a potato with a fork. If not tender, reseal and bake for an additional 5–10 minutes. Once tender, remove packets from oven.
  8. Rest and Serve: Let the packets rest for 3–5 minutes before serving. Serve the foil packets directly on plates or transfer the contents to shallow bowls. Spoon any juices over the top for extra rich oniony, beefy flavor.

Notes

  • Use heavy-duty aluminum foil to prevent tearing during baking.
  • Adjust seasoning blend according to taste preferences or dietary needs.
  • If using larger potatoes, ensure pieces are cut uniformly to guarantee even cooking.
  • Foil packets can be customized with additional vegetables such as bell peppers or carrots.
  • Opening the packets during the last minutes of cooking helps reduce moisture if you prefer less steamed, softer textures.
