Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ cup cooked carrots (mashed or pureed)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
  • Splash of water (to adjust dough consistency)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Carrots: Cook the carrots until soft using boiling or steaming methods, then mash or puree them into a smooth consistency suitable for mixing into dough.
  2. Prepare the Blueberries: If using frozen blueberries, thaw them slightly before blending or mashing them into a puree to ensure ease of mixing.
  3. Make the Carrot Dough: In one bowl, combine half the oat flour, the pureed carrots, and half of the egg. Mix well to form an orange-colored dough, adding a splash of water if necessary to adjust the consistency.
  4. Make the Blueberry Dough: In another bowl, mix the remaining oat flour, blueberry puree, and the remaining egg to create a purple-colored dough. Adjust texture with water as needed to achieve a workable dough.
  5. Incorporate Optional Ingredients: If using, add the tablespoon of coconut oil and the cinnamon equally into each dough mixture before shaping for added flavor and nutrition.
  6. Shape the Twists: Roll out strips from both colored doughs. Twist one strip of carrot dough together with one strip of blueberry dough securely to form the distinctive twist shapes.
  7. Bake the Twists: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the twists on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Bake for 25–30 minutes until the treats are firm and have a golden color.
  8. Cool the Treats: Remove the twists from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog, ensuring they are firm enough and safe to eat.

Notes

  • Ensure carrots are fully cooked to be soft and digestible for dogs.
  • You can substitute oat flour with whole wheat flour if your dog has no grain sensitivities.
  • Adjust water quantity to get the perfect dough consistency; it should be firm but pliable.
  • Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
  • Consult your vet if you plan to introduce new ingredients to your dog’s diet, especially cinnamon and coconut oil.
