Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 4 sheets graham crackers (crushed into crumbs)

Chocolate

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon semi-sweet chocolate chips (for topping)

Marshmallows

  • 1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows

Fruit

  • 1/2 cup sliced strawberries
  • 1 large banana, sliced (or 1/2 cup banana chips)

Nuts

  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans

Equipment

  • 10”-12” cast iron skillet (or oven-proof skillet as an alternative)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the graham cracker base: Crush about 4 graham cracker sheets into fine crumbs using a food processor or by pounding them in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin. Lightly grease a cast iron skillet and evenly sprinkle the crushed graham crackers across the bottom.
  2. Add the first layer of chocolate chips: Sprinkle 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the graham cracker crumbs to create a rich chocolate base.
  3. Layer the marshmallows: Cover the chocolate chips with a solid layer of 1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows, evenly distributed to cover the skillet bottom entirely.
  4. Top with fruit and nuts: Arrange the sliced strawberries and bananas over the marshmallows. Then sprinkle 1/4 cup chopped pecans and the reserved 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips on top for added texture and flavor.
  5. Cook the dip (Indoor method): Place the skillet in the oven and broil on HIGH for 3-4 minutes, watching closely until the marshmallows puff up and turn a golden brown. Remove from the oven carefully.
  6. Cool and serve: Let the dip cool for about 5 minutes before serving to allow it to set slightly. Scoop the warm dip with graham cracker rectangles, sticks, vanilla wafers, cookies, or pretzels for dipping.
  7. Cook the dip (Outdoor method): Follow steps 1-4 as above. Place the cast iron skillet on a grate over indirect heat of a campfire or grill, avoiding direct flame contact. Heat until marshmallows melt, taking care not to burn the chocolate. Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute regular-sized marshmallows by cutting them into smaller pieces or use marshmallow creme as an alternative.
  • Add pineapple chunks or pineapple sauce for a tropical twist reminiscent of classic banana splits.
  • Maraschino cherries make a great garnish if you want to enhance the banana split theme.
  • Use any chopped nuts you prefer or have on hand; peanuts or walnuts work well too.
  • A smaller cast iron skillet (6-8”) can be used if desired, adjusting ingredient quantities accordingly.
  • Feel free to customize ingredient amounts to suit your taste, adding more chocolate, fruit, or nuts as you like.
  • If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, use another oven-safe skillet but avoid if camping outdoors for best results.
